History of this Website

The FINNJETweb went online in February 2001 - still under the name "GTS Finnjet Infosite". How everything started: In Autumn 2000 I got to know Milan Lötsch via ICQ. He's a Finnjet-fan just like me. He had got a Finnjet page, similar to this one, but he registered www.finnjet.de and Silja Line ha obviously something against that. In the end they even wanted to take him to court. So he had to shut down all activities. However, the pages are still available on this URL: http://members.tripod.com/finnjet. Then somewhen I started some ralleys on the Internet for searching Photos, News and other Information about the ship. I already collected all kinds of stuff in "real" and now I also looked for "FINNJET" on the Internet. I found so many photos there, that I needed to think about what I could do with them. I thought already a long time before February 2001 about opening a Finnjet site, but I was afraid of Milan's story, that I would get in trouble with Silja Line, just like he did. But then I thought about it again, I didn't actually have any registered DE, COM, ORG, NET domain or something like that and also my contents were (and still are!) all "clean" and correct with the Copyrights and so I just opened and continued. This went fine for 16 months but then I got a phonecall from Mr. Rohrbach, CEO of Silja Line Germany shouting at me in an unacceptable way telling me what I write makes Silja loose of 100.000's of Euros. He probably meant my report about the article in Helsingin Sanomat saying Finnjet is for sale, but it seems like he did not even know about that article!! So for now the site was offline and laid up. After several talks with Silja Line Finland I thought then that there shouldn't be any problems anymore, so I re-opened the site in October 2002. The first general aspect for opening the page at all was the huge number of pictures in my digital archives. Since I opened the site, I met more and more Finnjet fans, who could all help me with some Photos of Finnjet or other nice things (Thank You very much!!). Slowly my page got more famous, and slowly also the Link pages of other sites contained this site. I got always some new ideas which I could put on this site and Ialso have a "plan" which things I'm planning to put on this site (and which not!). The Updating frequence is relatively irregular, but as you might have noticed I'm trying to update a few times per month at least. Well, and today the relations to Silja are back to normal again, the site is reachable via three Top-Level Domains and the site developes itself more and more to THE information source about GTS FINNJET. And: Listen and be astonished, even on Finnjet's bridge my page is known. Captain Juhani Lönnroos is alleged to have said the site is very good and the page he likes most is the "Age"-Page! :-) Thanks.

The webmaster about himself

Who's the webmaster? My name is Mathias Saken and I live in southern Germany, more precisely in Speyer, this strange but historically important "one horse town" with 50.000 citizens :)

I was the first time on Finnjet in 1992, but I was too young then to remember it very well. Then I was on Finnjet 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. If one is generally able to be interested in things like this you need to be only once on board and you're "fan"! :) Also in the future I'll probably be on board every year at least once. What is so amazing in that ship? Finnjet is unique! Finnjet is much faster, Finnjet has Gasturbines, she was the first real Cruiseferry and when she was built 4x bigger than the bigegst ferry before! Also the ambiance is much different than on other ferries. It's just a very very special ship that has been part of my Finland holidays. Finnjet is also called "the queen of the baltic sea" not without reason! Last but not least Finnjet is nowadays the only real cruiseferry serving Germany except the Color Line ships. For me as 50%-Finn those anyway have a big disadvantage: What in hell do I want in Norway..? ;) Ok, enough about ferries! I was born on 1st March 1988 in Cologne and nowadays I study tourism at the university of applied sciences at Worms (south-western Germany). My (in fact unnormal) hobbies are of course GTS FINNJET, Ferries and ships in general, Music, Radio, Internet etc... Additionally I was on air as a Radio DJ together with a friend of mine at Radio Darmstadt every Saturday at 18:50 with our "PartyMixX" until 2006. I still mix music sometimes but the lack of time has definately reduced my efforts.
